SGPA to CGPA Calculator (Credit-Weighted, with Percentage)

Combine your semester SGPAs into a CGPA. Enter each semester's SGPA and credits for the official credit-weighted formula — or leave credits blank for a simple average — and see the percentage equivalent.

Formula

CGPA = Σ(SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ(credits) — if every semester has equal credits this reduces to a simple average

Your semesters

Enter the SGPA printed on each semester's marksheet. If your semesters carry different credit loads, enter each semester's total credits too — the official formula weights by credits. Leave every credits box blank for a plain average. Add a row per semester; most B.Tech programmes have eight.

How SGPA becomes CGPA

SGPA is your grade-point average for one semester; CGPA is the running average across all completed semesters. The official formula used by VTU, AKTU, Anna University, JNTU, SPPU, Mumbai University and most other universities on the 10-point CBCS pattern is the credit-weighted one:

CGPA = Σ(SGPAᵢ × Cᵢ) ÷ ΣCᵢ — multiply each semester's SGPA by that semester's total credits, add the products, divide by total credits

When every semester carries the same credit load, the credits cancel out and the formula reduces to a simple average of the SGPAs — which is why the two methods give the same answer for equal-credit programmes and different answers everywhere else.

Why credits change the answer

Take three semesters with SGPAs 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0. As a simple average the CGPA is exactly 8.00. But if the credit loads were 24, 24 and 16 — a lighter final semester, as happens when a project term replaces coursework — the weighted CGPA is (7.0×24 + 8.0×24 + 9.0×16) ÷ 64 = 7.88. The strong semester counted less because it carried fewer credits. This is why universities print the weighted figure on transcripts, and why a simple average can flatter or depress your real CGPA by a tenth of a point or more.

The percentage conversion is a separate choice

SGPA → CGPA has one formula; CGPA → percentage does not. Pick the conversion your university prescribes — the selector above covers the four families in circulation:

Formula family8.25 CGPA becomesTypical users
CGPA × 9.578.38%CBSE boards and many central universities — the most common default
CGPA × 1082.50%KTU and universities with a direct mapping
(CGPA − 0.75) × 1075.00%VTU, Anna University (check your regulation)
(CGPA − 0.5) × 1077.50%BPUT and several technological universities

Important: universities revise conversion rules between schemes. The figure on your official transcript always wins — check the circular printed on the back of your marksheet before quoting a percentage on applications.

If you need a US 4.0-scale GPA

A 10-point CGPA is not a 4.0 GPA and no official bridge exists. For a rough orientation, the CGPA to GPA converter shows the proportional estimate and explains what US admission offices actually do with Indian transcripts. For percentage in the other direction, see the CGPA to percentage calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) covers one semester only; CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) covers every semester completed so far. Your marksheet typically shows one SGPA per semester plus a running CGPA.

How do I calculate CGPA from SGPA?

Multiply each semester's SGPA by that semester's total credits, add the products, and divide by the total credits: CGPA = Σ(SGPA × credits) ÷ Σ(credits). If all semesters have equal credits, this is just the simple average of the SGPAs.

What if I don't know my semester credits?

Leave every credits box blank and the calculator uses a simple average. That is exactly right for equal-credit programmes and approximately right otherwise — but the weighted figure on your transcript is the official one.

How do I convert my CGPA to a percentage?

It depends on your university. The most common formula is CGPA × 9.5 (CBSE), but VTU and Anna University use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, BPUT uses (CGPA − 0.5) × 10, and KTU uses CGPA × 10. Pick yours in the formula selector above.

Does one bad semester ruin my CGPA?

No — a weak semester drags the CGPA in proportion to its credits. With equal credits, one 6.0 among eight semesters averaging 8.5 pulls the CGPA to about 8.19. Later strong semesters dilute the early one further, which is why recovery is mathematically real, not just motivational.
