GWA stands for General Weighted Average — the standard academic average used by Philippine universities. It is the unit-weighted mean of your subject grades on the 1.00–5.00 scale, where 1.00 is the best possible grade and 3.00 is the usual passing mark. It is the Philippine counterpart of the US GPA, but inverted: a lower GWA is better.
Multiply each subject's final grade by its credit units, add the products, and divide by the total units. For example, 1.25 in a 3-unit subject and 1.50 in a 3-unit subject give (1.25×3 + 1.50×3) ÷ 6 = 1.375 GWA.
Under the widely referenced CHED brackets, 1.20 or better is Summa Cum Laude range, 1.45 or better is Magna range, and 1.75 or better is Cum Laude range. A GWA of 1.75 or better is also the common Dean's List threshold, and around 2.00 or better is a typical master's degree admission bar. Exact cutoffs are set per university.
The math is identical — both are credit-weighted averages. The difference is the scale direction: US GPA runs 0.0–4.0 with 4.0 as best, while Philippine GWA runs 1.00–5.00 with 1.00 as best. A 1.75 GWA is strong; a 1.75 GPA would be failing.
It depends on your university. Some schools exclude PE and NSTP units from the GWA computation, others include them. Check your student handbook — if your school excludes them, simply leave those subjects out of the calculator.
