Compute your Bocconi media ponderata on the 30-point scale, with 30 e lode counted as 31, CFU weighting and the base for your final mark out of 110.
| Mark | CFU |

Enter each exam's mark out of 30 and its CFU (crediti formativi universitari). Exams below 18 are failures and are not recorded, so leave them out.
| Grade | Grade points | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 30 e lode | 31 | Outstanding — the only mark above 30, counted as 31 in the average |
| 30 | 30 | Excellent |
| 29 | 29 | Very good |
| 28 | 28 | Very good |
| 27 | 27 | Good |
| 26 | 26 | Good |
| 25 | 25 | Solid |
| 24 | 24 | Solid |
| 23 | 23 | Fair |
| 22 | 22 | Fair |
| 21 | 21 | Fair |
| 20 | 20 | Pass |
| 19 | 19 | Pass |
| 18 | 18 | Lowest passing mark |
| Input | Result |
|---|---|
| 30L (6 CFU) + 27 (12 CFU) + 24 (6 CFU) | 27.25 / 30 → base 99.9 / 110 |
| All 30 (60 CFU) | 30.00 / 30 → base 110 / 110 |
| 28 (12 CFU) + 25 (12 CFU) + 30L (6 CFU) | 27.40 / 30 |
| Six exams at 24, 60 CFU total | 24.00 / 30 → base 88.0 / 110 |
Bocconi marks exams out of 30, and higher is better — but the grading culture behind the number is different from the US. A 27 is a perfectly respectable exam; a 30 is genuinely rare and the commission that awards it can decide to add lode (with praise), the only mark that exceeds 30.
Because it is so scarce, a single 30 e lode moves your media more than the raw numbers suggest. Counted as 31, it can lift an otherwise mid-27 average above 30 if enough credits sit behind it.
| Step | Rule |
|---|---|
| 1 — Credit-weighted average | Each mark is weighted by the CFU of the course. Courses with more CFU dominate |
| 2 — Rescale to 110 | base = average ÷ 30 × 110, with each 30 e lode counted as 31 |
| 3 — Thesis bonus | Up to 4 points for the final paper plus 1 point for an internship or exchange on a BSc; up to 8 plus 1 for an MSc |
| 4 — Rounding | The Board rounds the final grade; a decimal of 5 or above rounds up |
| 5 — 110 e lode | Requires an excellent thesis, at least two exams passed with 30 e lode, a final grade of at least 110 and no disciplinary action — all conditions met together |
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| A failed exam is invisible | A mark below 18 is not recorded. It never enters the average and there is no penalty in the GPA — you simply retake the exam |
| You cannot repeat a pass | Once an exam is passed it cannot be retaken to raise the mark. The first acceptable result is the one that counts |
| Seminars do not count | Activities assessed as pass/fail — seminars, workshops, internships — earn CFU but are excluded from the GPA |
| Only two extra exams count | A maximum of two additional curricular activities enter the GPA. If you take more, only the two best results are used |
| Transferred marks | Exams from other universities keep the original mark and are converted to 30 using Bocconi's own conversion tables |
The 30-point scale, the treatment of 30 e lode as 31, the CFU weighting, the exclusion of non-numeric activities and the graduation rules are taken from Bocconi's published Master of Science rules and regulations and the university's guide to calculating the Grade Point Average.
It is the credit-weighted mean of your exam marks on the 30-point scale, where the weight of each exam is its CFU. Bocconi calls this the GPA. Because it is weighted by CFU, a 12-CFU exam affects the outcome twice as much as a 6-CFU one.
A mark of 30 e lode counts as 31 in the average, even though no exam is marked above 30. It is the only value that can push a media ponderata above 30, and it is also part of the requirement for graduating with 110 e lode.
Yes. Italian marks are compressed at the top and 30 is awarded sparingly, so a 27 in a serious Bocconi exam is a solid result — roughly equivalent to a strong B or B+ in a US system. A media in the high 20s is competitive.
No. A mark below 18 is a fail, is not recorded, and never enters the average. The only cost of failing is the extra study time and the exam session you spend re-taking it, which can matter for graduating on time.
Your media is rescaled by dividing by 30 and multiplying by 110, then the thesis bonus is added — up to 4 points plus 1 for a BSc, or up to 8 plus 1 for an MSc. The result is capped at 110, with 110 e lode requiring several further conditions.
