Calculate your Bangladesh HSC GPA the way the education boards do: the 5.00 grade scale, the 4th-subject bonus rule and the one-F rule that zeroes the whole result.
| Subject grade | 4th subject |
|---|
Enter every subject's grade and tick the box next to your optional 4th subject. Bangla and English are two-paper subjects — enter the combined grade, exactly as the board publishes it.
| Grade | Grade points | Marks range |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 5.00 | 80–100% · the Golden A+ band |
| A | 4.00 | 70–79% |
| A− | 3.50 | 60–69% |
| B | 3.00 | 50–59% |
| C | 2.00 | 40–49% |
| D | 1.00 | 33–39% |
| F | 0.00 | 0–32% · a fail in a compulsory subject zeroes the whole GPA |
| Input | Result |
|---|---|
| Six compulsory A grades, no 4th subject | 5.00 of 5.00 |
| Six compulsory A grades + A+ in the 4th subject | 5.00 (bonus +3.00, then capped) |
| 5.00+5.00+4.00+4.00+4.00+5.00 compulsory, A in the 4th | 4.83 of 5.00 |
| One compulsory F among A grades | Result fail — one F in a compulsory subject zeroes the GPA |
This is the rule that confuses everyone, and it is the reason two students with identical compulsory grades can end up with different results. Your optional 4th subject is not averaged in like the others. Only the part of its grade point above 2.00 is added, as a bonus, on top of your compulsory total.
| Grade in the 4th subject | Grade point | Bonus added |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 5.00 | +3.00 |
| A | 4.00 | +2.00 |
| A− | 3.50 | +1.50 |
| B | 3.00 | +1.00 |
| C | 2.00 | +0.00 |
| D or F | 1.00 or 0.00 | +0.00 — the rule floors at zero, so the 4th subject can never pull you down |
| Subject | Grade | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| Bangla (compulsory) | A+ | 5.00 |
| English (compulsory) | A | 4.00 |
| ICT (compulsory) | A+ | 5.00 |
| Physics (compulsory) | A+ | 5.00 |
| Chemistry (compulsory) | A− | 3.50 |
| Higher Mathematics (compulsory) | A | 4.00 |
| Biology (4th subject) | A+ | 5.00 → bonus 3.00 |
| GPA = (26.50 + 3.00) ÷ 6 | 4.92 | |
Without the 4th subject the same student would score 4.42. That 0.50 difference is why choosing a 4th subject you can score highly in is a genuine strategic decision, not an afterthought.
An F in any compulsory subject sets your entire HSC GPA to 0.00 and marks the result as Failed, no matter how many A+ grades you have elsewhere. The board publishes no GPA at all in that case.
The optional 4th subject is the sole exception: failing it does not fail you, it merely removes the bonus. Everything else is unprotected — which is why the single most valuable piece of exam advice is to protect your weakest compulsory subject rather than polishing your strongest.
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| GPA 5.00 | Your weighted average works out to the maximum, often with help from the 4th-subject bonus. You can hold an A in one subject and still reach it |
| Golden A+ | An A+ in every single compulsory subject individually. Remove the 4th subject entirely and the GPA is still 5.00 |
Universities and scholarship committees distinguish the two, so a plain "GPA 5.00" on a CV is not the same claim as a Golden A+.
The 5.00 grade scale, the 33-mark pass threshold, the 4th-subject bonus formula and the one-F rule come from the grading system used by all Bangladesh general education boards for HSC, published by the education boards and repeated in university admission notices.
Convert each subject's marks to a letter grade and then to a grade point on the 5.00 scale, add the grade points of your compulsory subjects, add the 4th-subject bonus if you have one, and divide by the number of compulsory subjects. The maximum is 5.00.
Only the part of your optional subject's grade point above 2.00 is added. An A+ adds 3.00, an A adds 2.00, a B adds 1.00 and anything from C down adds nothing. The bonus is added to your total before dividing, and it can never reduce your GPA.
If the subject is compulsory, your entire HSC GPA becomes 0.00 and the result is recorded as Failed — regardless of your other grades. If the failed subject is your optional 4th subject, you simply lose the bonus and your GPA is unaffected.
GPA-5 means your final average reached 5.00, which the 4th-subject bonus can help you achieve even with an A somewhere. Golden A+ means you earned an A+ in every compulsory subject individually, so the GPA stays 5.00 even with no bonus at all.
Both are two-paper subjects. The board publishes a single combined grade for each, so enter the combined grade point the board awarded rather than an average you calculate yourself.
