UCD GPA Calculator — University College Dublin Grade Points

Calculate your University College Dublin GPA on the official grade-point scale (A+ = 4.2 down to NG = 0.0), weighted by ECTS credits, with the honours classification bands 1H, 2H1, 2H2 and Pass.

GradeCredits (ECTS)
—

Enter each module's letter grade and its credit value — most UCD modules are 5 ECTS. GPA = Σ(grade point × credits) ÷ Σ(credits).

Formula

GPA = Σ(grade point × credits) ÷ Σ(credits). Grade points: A+ 4.2, A 4.0, A− 3.8, B+ 3.6, B 3.4, B− 3.2, C+ 3.0, C 2.8, C− 2.6, D+ 2.4, D 2.2, D− 2.0, E 1.6, F 1.0, G 0.4, NG 0.0.

Second Class Honours, Grade 1 (2H1)3.08 – 3.67

Third Class Honours (Pass)2.00 – 2.47

Every module grade converts to a grade point on a scale that tops out at 4.2, not 4.0 — that is the single most common source of confusion when UCD students compare themselves against US-style GPAs. An A+ earns 4.2 grade points per credit, so a perfect transcript reads 4.20, not 4.00.

Credits decide how much a grade moves your GPA

UCD weights by ECTS credits, so a 5-credit module pulls your GPA exactly twice as hard as a 2.5-credit one. Before resitting or repeating anything, check the credit values: rescuing a 10-credit module from D to B lifts a 60-credit stage GPA by 0.20, while the same rescue on a 5-credit module lifts it by only 0.10.

Where these numbers come from

The grade-point values (A+ 4.2 through NG 0.0) and the honours classification bands come from UCD's published grading scheme. The percentage column is a widely used guide, not an official UCD mapping — UCD does not publish a fixed grade-to-percentage table, and module boards set grade boundaries per assessment. Always confirm programme-specific rules (compensation, resits, which stages count toward your award GPA) with your school office.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the UCD scale go to 4.2 instead of 4.0?

UCD assigns A+ a grade point of 4.2, one step above A at 4.0, so the scale has extra headroom at the top. When comparing with US 4.0-scale GPAs, a rough conversion is to multiply the UCD figure by 4/4.2 (about 0.952), though no official conversion exists.

What GPA do I need for First Class Honours at UCD?

A GPA of 3.68 or higher on the 4.2 scale puts you in the First Class Honours band. Second Class Honours Grade 1 starts at 3.08, Grade 2 at 2.48, and a Pass at 2.00.

What is the pass mark at UCD?

The commonly used guide is 40%, corresponding to a D grade (2.2 grade points). D− (2.0) and below are failing grades at module level, though some programmes allow compensation — check your programme regulations.

Do all stages count toward my final award GPA?

It depends on the programme. Many UCD honours degrees weight later stages more heavily (for example, counting only Stage 2 onward, or weighting the final stage most). The calculator here gives a plain credit-weighted average — apply your programme's stage weights separately.

What does NG mean on a UCD transcript?

NG means No Grade — the module was not successfully completed and carries 0.0 grade points, dragging the GPA like an F or G would.
